Calling Home...

As Jill can attest, I have become quite addicted to my Iphone. I have also noticed there are a number of apps made for the London Tourist. Self Guided Tours, Maps etc. But I was worried about data charges etc. Then I heard there is app called Skype that you can use to make phone calls over the wireless network. I need a phone for work and to keep track of the kids. It also so looks like there are versions for other phones too.

Its more convenient than renting a special phone, and at $13.99 a month or 2.3 cents a minute sounds cheaper than buying phone cards.

Check it out here.

  1. Skype's a video phone service. I think all smartphones can be set up to use wi-fi when available to place calls, I know Anna's set up that way so she doesn't stream too much data over Sprint's network. I was going to set up a Skype account and take our netbook, then use it in whatever hotspots I find (Starbucks, hotel, etc). I still need to check if it works in Europe, but Anna's phone can, in theory, work as a mobile hotspot for 5 devices.

  2. It also had a voice only option, Apple doesn't come with that capability naturally but beyond the skype app there are other apps that do the same thing. I cannot speak for Jill's Droid but if the capability isn't built in than we can get an app. From what I have read, the real key is to make sure that you turn off all your roaming, and your cell signal searching. Either way, way more convenient than the old way of phone cards and pay phones. I'll have to download it and test it.

  3. I was also going to ask my office to upgrade me to an international phone while I'm gone. I'm positioning it as "if you want to get ahold of me, this is your only option." I think we're test driving iphones and droids now to replace our current blackberries, and one or the other should be CDMA compatible or whatever the EU zone cell tech is.

  4. So I've reviewed Anna's phone's abilities, and sadly, it is CDMA, not GMS. They did mention that you can use it over wi-fi, however. I need to run that past the actual Sprint folks to be sure. Shows what I know. I still plan on bringing the netbook and calling the girls once or twice via Skype.
